Permanent Makeup Consultation – Plan Your Perfect Look

Client receiving a professional eyebrow permanent makeup consultation in a modern beauty salon

Consultation is the first step before any permanent makeup treatment. It helps us both get on the same page and make sure you feel confident, prepared, and excited for the procedure.

If you’re booking a full treatment, you don’t need to schedule the consultation separately—it’s already included at the start of your appointment. But if you’ve had permanent makeup done elsewhere or just want to talk things through first, I’m always happy to meet for a consultation on its own.

Don't worry if you don’t know the right terminology. Most clients just point to what they want fixed or enhanced, and that’s enough for us to get started.

Before your appointment, it’s really important to read through the pre-care instructions. When you know what to expect, you’ll feel much more relaxed on the day. Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol, or anything that might thin your blood. And it’s best not to get any facials or cosmetic treatments right before your session. Clean, calm skin always heals better.

Consent Form and Medical Info

Before we begin, I’ll ask you to fill out a short consent form and go over a few health questions. It doesn’t take long, but it’s really important.

We’ll go through things like allergies, medications, and any medical conditions you might have. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, we’ll need to wait before doing the treatment.

This step helps me make sure the procedure is safe for you and that your skin will heal properly. It also gives us a clear plan in case we need to make any adjustments. Nothing is rushed—we’ll take the time to go through it all together.

Checking Your Skin Type

Before we start, I’ll take a close look at your skin to see what type you have—whether it’s oily, dry, sensitive, or somewhere in between. This helps me choose the right technique and pigment for you.

Why does it matter? Because skin type affects how the color holds and how the area heals. For example, oily skin might need a bit more shading, while dry or thin skin needs a gentler touch.

It’s a simple step, but it makes a big difference in getting results that last and heal nicely.

Before Photos & Documentation

Before we get started, I’ll take a few clear photos of the area we’re treating. This helps us track your progress and see the full transformation later.

It’s not just for show—it’s also part of your file, so I can refer back to it during your touch-up and make sure everything heals the way it should. Most clients actually love seeing the side-by-side before and after—it really shows how far we’ve come.

Everything is kept private, of course, unless you give permission to share your results.

Shape and Colour – We Decide Together

Once we’ve talked through everything, we’ll move on to drawing your shape.

I’ll use a pencil to sketch the brows or lips directly on your skin so you can see exactly how it will look. We won’t rush this part. You’ll have plenty of time to check it in the mirror, and we’ll adjust it together until you feel completely happy with the shape.

If you’re not sure what suits your face best, don’t worry—that’s where I come in. I’ll guide you through what works with your features and explain why, so we can make those decisions together.

Once we’ve got the shape right, I’ll try a few pigment colours on your skin to see what matches best. The goal is to choose a shade that heals beautifully and looks natural—not too dark, not too warm, and definitely not grey or orange.

Correcting Old Permanent Makeup

If you’ve had permanent makeup done before—like old faded brows or lip lines that didn’t heal quite right—we’ll take a close look and see what can be done.

Can we fix it in one session? Sometimes yes, but often not right away. If the old pigment has changed colour or is still quite strong, we might need to do a neutralising session first to balance it out. Once that settles, we can move on to your new shape and colour.

If the old tattoo is still very dark or uneven, I’ll let you know honestly whether we can work over it, or if laser removal might be the better first step. Either way, we’ll talk through all the options together so you know exactly what to expect.
